Covering letter

How do you write a covering letter for a job? Should it be short and precise and not say anything that is already on the CV? Should it be specific about the job that one is applying for or should it be about myself?

Your cv should be about yourself.

Your covering letter should explain why you are sending the cv to them.

I am particularly interested in working for your company as ----- because............ and enclose a copy of my curiculum vitae.

Ethel's got it covered- you don't put anything else in your covering letter, not without the risk of it being repeated on your CV anyway.

Keep it brief Fis - they already know everything about you from the C.V. you've attached to it. Just the usual Dear Sirs, the reference number of the post, explain that you have pleasure in enclosing your c.v., and then maybe a brief (a paragraph at most really) bit explaining why you are applying for the post. Finish it off with the usual "I look forward to hearing from you in due course...etc. etc." and your name - That'll do

I agree with all of the above. Your CV should be typed but I would advise you hand write the letter.

I always type my letters unless the employer specifies a hand written application. I think it looks more professional. Unless you have extremely beautiful handwriting, I would stick to typing. If an employer does request a hand written application, make sure it is neat and tidy on nice paper. You have to remember that hundreds of people may apply for the same job and your application has to stand out to stand a chance. Good luck!

Hey fis.....as an employer I would agree with all the above, but I'd prefer a hand written letter, short (less than one page) just introducing yourself. As said above, if your handwriting is really bad then type the letter. Make sure your letter and CV are tailored to the job your applying for

Yes. Just make it brief and concise and your qualifications in general.
