when opening up a pdf file, I cannot appear to type onto the document. It is an application form that I wish to complete but it won't let you type onto the file. Is there a way of solving this problem?

Adobe give it away free to ensure that the PDF format is widely used, so that those who wish to create (or edit) PDF documents will buy their expensive software for creating & editing PDFs..
So, to edit the document (which, in effect, is what you're seeking to do) you require something more than just a 'reader'. Fortunately, you're not tied to Adobe's software. If you download this free program, you'll be able to open and edit (i.e. type into) the document:

Perhaps the form wasn't created properly. If it was, it'd look like the form at http://www.quite.com/box/qboxbuy1.pdf which can be filled in with Acrobat Reader and printed, or maybe even saved and emailed back.
If it isn't like this form, you'll have to print it and fill it out the old fashioned way like vehelpfulguy suggests.

Many PDF documents are little more than photocopies of pre-existing paper forms. In my answer, above, I was assuming that the form was probably something based on a paper document.
If the form was actually created as a PDF document, with the intention of permitting some limited text input, it should be possible to add the required text - usually with a maximum of 1 line - as long as 'Text mode' has been selected in Acrobat Reader. (Click the 'T' button, above the document).
