The local Uni no longer supply them with the academic gown. In these litigious times they probably think it's better to be safe than sued by somebody hit by a flying board.

I guess you've got to be Inuit to win it.
Never did understand not tangoing with an eskimo. I think Alma Cogan invented the rule in less liberal times. She could never have rhymed Inuit with "No, no, no!"

I was simply going to point out that gowns can also be a safety hazard. The one I hired for my degree ceremony was rather too long. When my name was called to receive my certificate, I strode proudly forward, only to trip over the edge of my gown and go hurtling head-first towards Rab Butler who, as Chancellor, was clutching my certificate with a look of fear on his face!
