I live near a public trail. intended for walkers, cyclists and horses. Dogwalkers are faced with expensive fines if they don't clear up after their dogs ~ but this doesn't apply to horses. Is this fair?

Dog poo is pretty vile. In contrast, horse droppings are almost fragrant. It seems fair enough to me.
I always say the same about cats - they constantly leave a vile mess all over the plants in my front garden, wish the owners could be fined for that!
I used to have that Ann, until one day I let the dog out of the gate.
fox poo is horrible.
Yes. A reason for not allowing dog mess on paths is that it can pass disease to humans, in somewhat unusual circumstances, and to other dogs. Horse muck doesn't present those hazards.
horses like rabbits & sheep are veggies (monogastric). Their effluent enriches soil & is considered harmless.
rabbet - take a bucket and a shovel and pick it up take it home and put it on your roses!!
I always clear up after my dog in the park get there is tons & tons of duck s*it everywhere as there are two lakes in the park.
To be fair it's pretty impossible to carry a bag and shovel on the back of a horse then get off, make sure the horse is safe, get it up, remount and take it home. not really practical, and it's only a bit of horse poo, it's not radioactive.
In fairness, horse poo is rather easier to spot - and avoid - than dog poo.
I'm off to Zante this afternoon. The horses have a bag underneath their bum to catch the poo. It's such a lovely, clean island. I think horse riders in this country should clean up behind themselves.
Do what they do in Killarney - they strap like nappy-sack to the @rses of the horses who pull the jaunty cars - I guess they grip them around hind legs - there you go not a horse poo in the whole of Killarney. But to be sure to be sure - if you get into the jaunty cars you can be sure you can be whiffed out or maybe black out within minutes. Only kidding. There is a smell - my goodness you have to go when you have to go.
We live on a lane which horses often leave their poo on, sometimes right outside our house. It really doesn't bother us; it's the country, we expect it. Welshie has the right idea. I scoop it up and use it in the garden. If I want it for the vegetable plot I rot it down with some straw first though. My cat, on the other hand, even though surrounded by open fields chooses to poo in the garden.... And yes it STINKS.

> Is this fair?

Tempted to say "No, it's sh*t", but in fact it seems pretty fair ...
themorrigan, is that in argassi? I'm off to Alykanas, pretty close
for attention of Baldric - no it was attached/harnessed around the horses rear end and legs - actually looked cruel to me but must be the law of Killarney.
yes AC its about ten minutes outside argassi we're flying out of Leeds Bradford next wednesday for a week.
