I have just twisted/cricked my neck really badly and can't move. what should I do? I don't think I can go to work and play the piano all day. I will phone the chiropractor but what can I do in the meantime?

I always think chiropractors are a waste of money - keep telling you to come back at 50 a time when your neck will get better in its own time. Put some heat on it, one of those microwave herbal wraps or a warm hot water bottle, and just relax. Try massaging the muscle yourself. Good luck!
You'll be more comfortable if you lie on the floor - no pillow - and trie and relax.
wrap a bag of frozen peas in a towel and put it on your neck. don't use the peas without a towel as you can get a frost burn

An Ice pack will help. Use a pack of frozen peas!! Do this several times today. It will reduce the inflammation and is the first thing that doctors will suggest if you have pulled a muscle. Heat will help relieve the pain, but initially stick to ice packs. Take paracetamol and rest today. Don't attempt to lift anything or use your arms to any degree.

Snap Woofgang!
and make sure that you don't eat the peas afterwards. Label up the packet and keep it in the freezer for 'ice pack' use only.
morning gessoo!!
you have my sympathies as I've done this often myself. No good for now but I suggest you get a product called Biofreeze- I used to get it from a chiropractors but now I think you can only get it online. I swear by this for taking the edge off the pain when you have to carry on with something. It goes on cold rather than hot and is a gel, not a smelly icky cream. Hope you feel better soon.
Sorry I thought hot would be better than cold, but who am I ? Just a mere housewife ... Good luck !
I've just been to the oesteopath with my (similar) condition.

He says to use a COLD bag of peas, wrapped in a towel. And this advice (with a massage) cost me 30 - but well worth it. If I need to go again, it will be 5 cheaper.

Judiewudie - this time last week, I would've agreed with you. I was using a hot water bottle but COLD works much better!
I agree with the others about not going to see someone who is going to manipulate your neck - it will go right on its own. The worst of all the times its happened to me was absolutely chronic, I nearly passed out with the pain when it happened, my doc said it would start to ease after three days and sure enough it did and I made a full recovery within about five days. It sure is painful, but it will get better with each passing day. Good Luck

judiewudie. Don't ever call yourself 'just a housewife'! It's one of the most important jobs in the world. Anyway, you are not wrong about heat. Cold takes down inflammation as well ask masking the pain, so is best for a new injury. However, heat helps to relax the muscles which is also good. Having just broken an vertebra, I can assure you that a hot water bottle was a great support!!!

scarlett, can i suggest you try and work out how/what caused this prob. i kept getting a sore neck, dicovered that cos my bed was under the window when snuggled up in bed my neck was exposed, voilla! one stiff neck. moved bed, no more stiff neck!
