Do O.A.P.s have to apply for a free TV license or is it issued automatically? I have asked around and no one seems to know, which makes me wonder if there are folks out there who are still paying when they don't need to.

Only if 75 or over.

If you are currently 74 and your licence is due for renewal, you should buy a short-term licence to cover you up to your 75th birthday.

When you reach the age of 75, you may apply for a free over 75 TV Licence. You'll get the free licence every three years, provided they have your National Insurance number.

A free over 75 TV Licence only covers the main home address. You’ll need to buy a separate TV Licence for any other properties.

thanks, that's cleared that up.
If someone has a full license and they become eligible for a free one they can get a refund for the unused months.
Not all OAPs only if you are 75 or over. The licence people remind you so there is no pisk of you paying after that.
