I can't possibly pretend to speak for the EDL but I would have thought that they work on the "any publicity is good publicity" principle. Their aim is to stir up as much trouble and racial hatred as they can. What better way to achieve this than to get on the nightly news, having a ruck with the Police ?

Em. You are probably right. Some of them, at least, will be educated in order to organise things such as today. But education isn't everything.

Nick Griffin of the BNP graduated from Cambridge ! Now I know he isn't overtly involved with the EDL, but his university background seems to have made little difference to his use of his education. He gave an interview on Channel 4 News in 2009, when he made the following statement of unbelievably, breathtaking ignorance ::

" Griffin claimed that "There's no such thing as a black Welshman", which was criticised by Vaughan Gething (the first black president of the Welsh NUS and the Welsh TUC, and the first black candidate for the Welsh assembly). Commenting on Griffin's claim, he said "On that basis, most white people wouldn't qualify. It's quite clear that Nick Griffin just doesn't accept that black British people or black Welsh people are entitled to call themselves proper, full citizens of the country."

So it would appear that even with an education, these people can still act like wassocks.

that's certainly true, but the EDL/BNP mindset doesn't corner the market when it comes to stupidity - you may recall that when UAF protested against Nick Griffin's appearance on "Question Time" in 2010, Martin Smith distinguished himself by assaulting a police officer and ended up in court.

I know some lads who have gone today, they are members of EDL, they've gone for a fight, they have no interest in the politics, they want a fight. they would of been football hooligans in another era

All the same insults etc thrown at the EDL as we have seen on countless occasions, but one has to ask when is a protest deemed acceptable?

Some were against the poll tax, the closure of mines, the bankers etc, etc and so took to the streets, some even made excuses for the rioting looting and destruction that took place on the streets of Tottenham, but if some are against the spread of Islam and Sharia law they are regularly lambasted on here and throughout the media.

To all those who continue to attack this particular group of protesters (the EDL) I ask this, who would be deemed acceptable to protest on such an important matter, or must all protest groups against a problem that many see as a threat to this country forced to remain silent, unless they wish to be called fascist or even deemed racist?
