Amusingly, but typically, i got an attempted murder reduced, because the Army a) wanted the man out of the army b) didn't want it getting out, to the British press, that one soldier was chasing another down a corridor, drunk, shouting "I'll kill you, you bastard!", when possessed of a sawn off shotgun which he fired from close range ( that was one of a veritably armoury of weapons found, utterly illegally, in his possession). By the time it got into court, I'd got it reduced so low as a charge that it would have been worth pleading guilty to, but the defendant wanted to fight it.
In an adjournment, the Brigadier heading the panel, asked us what was known about " this man". We said the defendant had an excellent record. "Not HIM!", exploded the Brigadier, in best Colonel Melchett mode, "the sergeant! Must be something wrong with a sergeant if a corporal wants to shoot him!" And that, in a nutshell, is the Army
