What family came to the throne in 1603 and was friendly with the French?

Must have the been the STUARTS at around that time.
The above post is correct, not so much James 1st, but James 2nd, definately allied himself with the French, but that was after he'd been deposed by William of Orange, and of course, there was Bonnie Prince Charlie, but thats another story.

More than just friendly, James I's mother Mary was married to the French King and she was until his death Queen Consort of France. James's father however was her second husband and cousin Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley.


As our friends north of the border will tell you, the Stewarts were already on the throne in 1603 but "came to the throne" of England that year after the death of Elizabeth. James I of England was James VI of Scotland, and by this time the family name of Stewart had progressed to the French spelling of Stuart.
