If I have offended you baldric, than I must say that was not intention. But the phrase "coloured" sprung out of the screen at me earlier today. I have no wish to fall out with you over this issue, as there are far better candidates here on AB for that purpose !
So, sorry for any offence that I might have caused.
I can't speak for all black people or any black people come to that, as I am deathly white, apart from my forearms. But I am fairly sure that Doreen Lawrence would much prefer to be called a black person rather than the use of some euphemism like coloured.
My father came over to London before WW2, from Ireland to look for work and I remember him telling me when I was a boy in the 1960's, of the boarding houses that had signs up saying ::
"No blacks, no dogs and no Irish" He always said that if he were black or canine, he might just have stood a chance of a room for the night but Irish was the clincher.
Language sometimes takes time to change. My neighbours here in my old mining village in South Wales still use phrases like " I'm just going down to the P***s for a pint of milk" despite the corner shop in question being owned by a Hindu family from Bombay, via Uganda ! Those neighbours seem not to understand how that offends a Hindu family. By the way, the kids of the Hindu's are tri-lingual, speaking their own language, English and now, also Welsh.
Not sure if my word above (P***s) is allowed !
