The website indicated by Quizmonster uses the Retail Price Index to calculate its worth. Using the purchase prices of two houses I know, their current values are underestimated by this calculation. House prices would seem to have increased in value by more than the RPI.

Obviously, individual house prices - even for identical houses - vary enormously, depending upon a number of factors. Never forget the importance of one of the most vital...'location, location, location'...for example.
All the website I linked to can do, therefore, is give a very rough estimate.
Another formula - for want of a better word - is the claim that house-prices double every nine years. A house currently valued at �200,000, say, was probably available in 1997 for �100,000 and in 1988 for �50,000. That formula and these very figures apply very closely to the house I currently own, for example.
