I applied for permanent residence for Canada but got denied because of my criminal record. It's been 4 years since my conviction - will I still be allowed to apply to criminal rehabilitation in order to get my visa?

I don't think so.
The minimum period to be 'deemed rehabilitated' is 5 years, with applications often taking over a year to process.

See 'Individual rehabilitation' here:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/inadmissibility/conviction.asp
Well it depends on a lot of things. For example, was the crime you committed in Canada or outside of Canada?
Also was the conviction a indictable offense? or a summary conviction?
If it was a summary conviction? if it was then if you wait one more year you should be considered rehabilitated and there is not need to apply.
But for more thorough info, check this site: http://www.visaplace.com/immigration-blog/applying-for-criminal-rehabilitation-in-canada

I hope that helps!
