My friend's passport expires while he is away in a non-EU country. What's the process for getting it replaced; he files Thursday.

Thanks

Depending on where he is going he may not be allowed entry. Many countries insist on the passport being vaild for six months beyond the date of landing.
He'll need to phone the passport office and make an appointment for a 'same day passport'.... and hopefully by Thursday!
He should check with his airline whether he will be allowed to travel. If they do allow him to travel, he can obtain a temporary passport from the British embassy in the country he is visiting (which could be a costly excersize). He could apply for a new one before he goes:

Sorry. I foolishly assumed you were asking how it can be replaced whilst he is away. That's what happens when you try to watch the TV and answer questions !!!!!
He may not be allowed either into the country or out of this one - many countries want at least a six week period before the passport expires.

Thanks everyone!
My son's passport ran out when we went on holiday. We only realised when boarding at the airport :-( They made a few phone calls to see if he'd be allowed to travel, but no such luck.
Managed to get an appointment at the Newport passport office, 5 days later, and got him a passport on a 'same day' basis.
Finally got to our destination, five days later and after another disaster (flight had to make an "emergency landing"!) only to be told that my husband, who had three months left on his passport, would not be allowed into the country, as you need six months.

Good luck with getting an appointment before Thursday and don't forget you'll need someone to sign the back of your photos before then too.

Photos don't need countersigning for a renewal - just done mine, not countersigned, got it back completed in a week.
Maybe its just child passports that do then.
Depending how far you live from the Pass port renewal office, can you not travel there & get it renewed?
