First, thank you to all those who gave advice on lizards when my son was obsessed with them. We took your advice and went to shop to speak to people there. While my OH and i were deciding lizards were a bit too "specialist" for us, my son fell in love with a hamster.
We have picked her up today. He's called her Tiffany (no idea where that came from).
We have a book for him to read, but any other advice welcome...

Pixie, get a baby brush the really soft ones and morning and evening, not during the day and gently stroke the hamster for a week, hamsters are not bad bighty little critters, they just need to get used to your touch, they mainly bite out of defence, I put a piece of used clothing over the cage but not that they could chew it but so they got used to your smel and wrap the...

I saw that in the book, viv. How strange, it wouldn't have occurred to me that they hibernate. So, thanks, I'll watch out for that! I also didn't realise they ate chicken (too long keeping guinea pigs, i think!)
Hi pixie I hope Toffee is doing well and I hope your son get's a lot of pleasure from her x

Six weeks, bernie

Thanks, pizza x
only my opinion pixie i would not start picking her up til about 2 months i was told that many moons ago by a person who used to breed them x
I would pick her up when she stops being 'startled' by your touch, I would also start stroking her straight away, and yes, be sure to keep her cage in a warm room or she will hibernate
Blimey, they eat chicken - didn't know that !
lol viv some of the ones we have had ate anything lol
It's years and years since we had hamsters, think we only fed them hamster food and veg - shocked to hear they are carnivores (ha ha).

Pixie - I think it's great the way you are handling this with so much responsibility. I wish all small furry pets were treated the same.

That's great. So we'll go slowly for a couple of weeks, get her used to voices and gentle stroking and gently pick her up when she seems calm.
I was surprised about the chicken. Had assumed they were vegetarian!
White meat with no fat and white fish (both in moderation) but no dairy products if I remember correctly.
Question Author
Thanks, Viv, we don't want to terrify her. I'm sure it's better for her to feel comfortable with us!
Interesting, shoota. I was told they like bits of cheese?
