The 'article' is over 3 years old so if it was going to be, I suspect it would a bit of a more common phenomena. I don't think Britain has the climate and planning laws / building regs may play a factor in popularity.
Any ideas what the planning permission would need to be on one? I'm thinking of it as a retirement living solution and giving the house to the sprogs....

I don't think it would be that difficult - I mean, it's just a big shed...
You could have a pre app consultation with your LA Planning officer. They're only too glad to get out of the office usually.
My office is in a spare bedroom, but a friend of mine who runs a music PR company has one of these - the first design - in the back garden of his London Home - keeps everything separate, just a short walk away, ideal.

No, B/rm4 is an Office,
but usually work on Dining room table or balcony (if nice)
'cause they're at front of house and I can have a nose at what's going on!
So many of us are working from home these days, no fixed desk in an office - unless you have a big house, it's a good idea.

I quite like the idea of being able to literally lock work away at the end of the day.

The customizable Garden Studio by UK company in.it.studios is insulated and can have heating, lighting, power outlets and even a bathroom or kitchen!
