Can you pin point when this started? It could be whiplash, torn ligament or even that you've sprained your neck.
On the topic of creams I use Tiger Balm.. which is similar to Deep Heat but I think works better. All good pharmacies should sell it.
I hope you get this sorted aussiebird23 x

Your GP is the only person who can help you at this stage aussiebird. He/she will be able to assess the problem & deal with it accordingly. Good luck & I wish you well.
P.S. Just as an aside - I suffererd with upper spine & neck problems for some time & nothing would alleviate the pain. I was eventually given a steroid injection in the top of my spine & have had no problems since - that was three years ago. The injection was administered at the hospital & the instant relief was wonderful.
You probably won't like this answer, but this is what happened to me. Neck pain for over a year, just got worse and worse. Went to the doctor, had physio, saw an osteopath for months, all at great expense and to no avail. Then a dentist friend suggested it may be my jaw, that my "bite" was out possibly caused by having teeth removed when I was younger. He took a mould of my teeth and made me a splint to wear at night. He said I have been clamping my teeth when I sleep! I had no knowledge of this and wasn't 100% convinced. However, now 6 months later and having worn the splint religiously every night the pain is almost gone. The splint is adjusted every couple of weeks which is a real fag, but a small price to pay for getting rid of that apalling pain. A couple of times I have forgotten to wear the splint and when I wake up the pain and stiffness is there again.
I don't know if this is your problem too, but its worth considering! Good luck.
