Blood Sugar Levels
25 Answers
Ten-year-old son complained yesterday of being "always thirsty". Out of interest, i, er, asked to borrow client's blood sugar machine (as you do) and have now scared myself. His reading is 14.9. Have tried to google normal range for children, but getting contradictory answers. Do i need to book a GP appointment?

Seems borderline/ normal to me, but with the history of "always thirsty" I would get an appt for to your GP.......... .no urgency.

Dunno....he was in for 3 months, sent him home with a machine and told me it should be below 5. He's dead now so it doesn't matter.
When he was rushed in it was off the scale so was having insulin injections. As he got better it was reduced to tablets and then it was reduced to diet controlled.
Diabetes was a symptom of another illness.

Thanks all. I believe the machine is working properly, as far as i know. It's used regularly. I've returned it now. I have never noticed him particularly drinking a lot. It was just the comment he made that made me wonder. I am used to elderly blood sugars, but i wasn't sure if the range was the same for children- and the principle is different. With elderly it's quality of life, with children you have to watch out for long-term effects. Ummm, i would also say under 5 is too low. We have to give biscuits in the evening to one of our diabetic clients if his blood sugar is under 7.
Thank you for all replies. I will find out asap and update you. Not aware of a drop-in clinic around here. X
