central heating

We had our central heating system installed just over a year ago,the problem we're having is that the radiators won't heat up unless the thermostat is on 26 and then if we turn it down it goes off surely this isn't right does this mean it is faulty?

It could be out of adjustment unless you are chilly mortals or it's wired wrong. I fitted one last week that wouldn't work unless it was turned up to 30C. Check the live feed is in the correct connector, if reversed the internal heater stays on. I prefer the simple bellows type that work on two wires.

Sounds like the thermostat is wrongly calibrated. Does it matter to you what the thermostat dial says if its doing the job? Perhaps use a independent temperature gauge in the room to get the right comfort temperature, and set the faulty temperature to the required level to achieve this. These things are hardly state of the art accuracy, but I agree they aren't normally that far out. You may be able to adjust the front dial in relationship to the inner workings to the egt the reading more in line.

Well thanx for your replies,Iwould leave it if i could turn it down slightly but it either has to be boiling hot if on or freezing cos its off i would like steady warm.

Check the setting on your boiler stat that might need adjusting it also makes a difference if thermostat is to high or low on the wall and how near is it to the nearest radiator?

Its about 5 foot from nearest radiator and just over halfway up the wall.

Hi zara 4, you say you 'had it installed' which I take to mean not a DIY job. If so, why not go back to whoever put it in and get them to put it right? I would imagine once you start messing about with it yourself they can deny any responsibility.

Hi zara stat sounds to be positioned correctly,have you tried setting the thermostat on the boiler higher? is the radiator nearest to stat getting hot enough? if not it may need bleeding, also check pressure in system it might need topping up the two lines on valve if i remember correctly should be in line with each other,hope this helps, also are rads fitted with thermostatic valves?one of these might be sticking

zara, Has the roomstat been sited in the same room as another heat source ? i.e. gas / electric / coal fire. If so, the roomstat will require re-siting ( hall or landing ideally ). Also 5ft. away from a radiator would render the stat to shut-down prematurely. But in any case, take wainmaries advice.

Thanx all for your help,I haven't fiddled with it thought i'd ask advice on here first i'll probably be better off getting someone out then.I assume from all your replies that its not normal though.
