Isnt It About Time We Put The Wars Behind Us?

Everyday when scanning the Sky channels there are endless documentaries about WW1 or WW2 or Hitler related programs every single day. No wonder there is still hatred toward the Germans, even by school children. Not long ago in Devon visiting German school children were being targeted by local kids with a load of anti German/war related bullying.

Of course no one should ever forget the wars but do we really need it thrust down our throats every single day. It really is time to put these wars and all the related programs on the back boiler, maybe then the kids will have the chance to grow up without so much hatred toward the Germans.

On one of my visits to Israel, I went to Schindler’s grave. Without these movies and documentaries, I doubt I’d have ever heard of him. There is more to war than killing.

My father was in the 8th army at the battle of El Alamein and he had the highest regard for Rommel, we as children were never taught to hate the German nation or Japanese even though my father returned home quite a broken man.

In a way, I think we already -have- put wars behind us.

In 1914, news that there was a war on would have reached most people by word of mouth and peer-pressure alone would have been enough to encourage a man to sign up.

By 1939, most of the population would have been following developments in Europe via the press and radio and needed equally little convincing to join up.

Since Vietnam, we've had anti-war protest marches and there is much hand wringing over every single combat fatality.

Clearly, pulbic attitudes have changed and politicians are painfully aware that warring is a surefire vote-loser *unless* they can garner overwhelming public support for a specific 'cause'.

The bad news for the Syrians is that we're twice bitten, thrice shy, as far as Middle East conflict is concerned. Or is it that we're flat broke?
