Nearly there, but I could do with some help 'explaning':
3 down: Hard ball glues, Yanks confess, keeping balls together for cannons (7) NUR_IN_ (glues is removed) I'm thinking it's nursing, but having trouble 'keeping balls'!
I could do with some help with:
35 across: Brings up god in paltry surroundings initially (6) _AN_IR (I think it's santir but can't work out why)
23 down: Rely on it a lot to begin with raising Brazillian perhaps (6) _AT_NI
Any help gratefully received
Thanks in advance

23d) Rely (lyre) is removed. Answer is Latino.

3d) Nursing is right. One definition is to keep cannonballs together!

Can't remember how I came to Santir, but that's the answer I had!
NURSING comes from 'nursing cannon' which is a snooker term, a cannon shot that aims to keep the three balls close together on the table.

35A is TRAINS.

RA= egyptian god.
TIN= paltry (in Chambers)
. . . . and of course, TRAINS becomes SANTIR
