Oil Boiler

will an oil boiler syphon oil from a barrel? I need to move my oil tank as im having a new one fitted early Monday morning in the same place, so I plan to move it Sunday and use a 5 gallon drum that night. i haven't got any drums with taps that are the same size bore as the pipe.

You're obviously set up with the conventional single pipe gravity oil feed Paul.
The oil pump in that boiler will lift oil from below the burner level, but an alteration to the pump is needed. Also, it would need a 2-pipe system.

Not worth the time and trouble for a temporary fix.

I guess, in theory, syphoning might work. I really don't know. I can't help thinking that you would come across problems with air getting in. Oil boilers are a bit like diesel engines. They don't like running out of fuel.

I'd be inclined to go for some kind of open-topped tank such as a roof storage tank. Something where you can get your hand in to make a simple outlet connection that will connect to your oil pipe.

The trouble is, you don't have much time.

thanks for the advice The Builder youv'e come to my rescue yet again. like you say its more trouble than its worth for 1 nights heating.i'll move the tank late tomorrow afternoon and use a couple of fan heaters if things get too cold. once again thanks for your help.
