A piece of thick cardboard placed under the tablecloth would be better. (If you have no other mats you can use.)

I like the bubblewrap idea.

Just how hot are everyone's plates and dishes? The only really hot one I will have is the veg dish (as they will have been nuked, having been cooked on Christmas Eve). I just put them on two pot stand things.
Alternatively one could serve salad.....
