My dad wants to cancel his vodafone contract (ends end of Nov) and just use pay as you go. Can he keep the phone and number if he uses vodafone PAYG?

yes he can keep the phone... essentially after the contract is over he has purchased the phone.

and yes he can keep his number... if he goes vodafone for PAYG then speak to them when he cancels the contract and they can port the number to PAYG.

However I'd be willing to bet they will offer him such a good deal when he tried to cancel he'll end up staying on contract :)
Yes he just has to give his months notice and tell them he wants to port to PAYG.

Thanks guys. They offered him a 10/month contract but these days (just retired) he won't be using his phone as often so I still reckon it will be cheaper with PAYG. Wasn't too sure about the details but I'll pass the info on. Many thanks guys!
keeping in mind that a lot of PAYG top ups have a time limit on them I'd be tempted to stick on contract at 10 a month.... if he is not using it then at least it's a easy to budget amount

and if he stays on contract if the phone ever breaks he is entitled to a free upgrade
Which PAYG top ups have a time limit on them Chuck?

You are way behind the times.
