Can't think of a more suitable category.

Watching a programme about Australia, and they mentioned the name of a place. I thought, "that can't be right" so did a google search of what I thought I had heard, and right enough, I HAD heard correctly.
Found this little article.

I wonder who on earth named these places, and more to the point, why?

Often (in this country) they're corruptions or mishearings of earlier names (and no doubt in Oz they may be corruptions of Aborigine words/names).

We have a fair few in the UK - Wyre Piddle is just one of them.
And Pratts Bottom
Pennsylvania has Intercourse and Bird I'th Hand as place names. In the UK there are Loggerheads, Bickering and Wittering and near here in Norfolk you can choose from Great Snoring and Little Snoring.
