3d - Picked up rock, a comparatively heavy type (6) I have B-E-E- I'm not sure whether this is one of the themed clues.

Bolder?
Question Author
I thought of that but can't see why.
Picked up = heard/sounds like - Boulder

Bold type is thick/heavy
If you take ould(just an idea) out if boulder, then it would be bnewer
Oh it will be 'bnewer' as it is swap old for new etc
type face = bold(er)?
Dreadful Crossword, IMO.

Thanks all. I can see it now and will enter BNEWER as the solution. Very odd crossword. Hope it doesn't turn into a habit with the Guardian.
Morning everyone. Absolute newby to the site but need a little help with my last which is 16d. Anyone help?
welcome william - you need to give us the clue, please - we all like to help but we don't all have the Guardian in front of us. :-)
new woman
from old (wo)man
I was put off when I read the preamble that said some answers have had bits changed (seasonal adjustment) and may not even be real words. I made half hearted start and got Goldberg and Bolder (or so I thought) , plus a few more, but I lost interest.
So it seems even the easy answer (Bolder) I thought I had found should have been BNEWER.
I would never have got that granny and grandad one either.
No, I'm going off the Guardian
No no factor
Yes, Psybbo- I'm not going to do it again until next year.
I like standard Guardian cryptics but don't like any of themed ones (unless the theme is pop music, football or maths) or the ones where letters are replaced or the answers are non-words
