dimplex storage heaters

I have just moved into a property with Dimplex storage heaters and am having troubles understanding them. I have eventually worked out the controls however am being given different advice regarding the mains plug. Someone said keep the mains plug switch on or the stored heat will be lost. Another person said turn the plug off in the morning and only switch it on when you need heat throughout the day. They are manually operated i.e. with boost control and input control dials. Help!

Why don't you have them replaced with something simple?

Dimplex storage heater are usually 'hard wired' to a seperate supply that switches itself on at "off peak" times. That reduces extra load on the power suppliers and is set at a lower rate.

Check that you have 2 fuseboxes. If so, one should be marked "storage heating". Or you could plug in a lamp to the heater socket. If it will come on at 5:30, on a weekday evening.. It's not the correct circuit for a storage heater.

A simple solution (if it's plugged into an ordinary ring main) would be to buy a plug in timer and manually set times for it to come on. But you'll be paying your normal (higher) rate for the power.

I am in the same position. When I moved in 18 months ago I emailed Dimplex (sorry can't remember the address but a Google search will do). They sent me a set of instructions by return of post - very helpful. Helps if you know the model numbers of your heaters.

Do you have a coin meter on your power supply?. If that's the case. Your Landlord can alter the 'pence per unit' settings to a higher rate. A little unfair when you only supply Electric heating.

If that's the case buy yourself an Oil heater... Much cheaper to run.
