You know even faithful Job pointed out the affinity that wrongdoers have with literal darkness when he said: “As for the eye of the adulterer, it has watched for evening darkness, saying, ‘No eye will behold me!’............ (Job 24:15)
What do you know about wrongdoers? are also in spiritual darkness, and such darkness.
. The apostle Paul said that sexual immorality, theft, greediness, drunkenness, reviling, and extortion are common among those ensnared in that darkness. But any who come to the light of God’s Word can change. And that only some of thing. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

I think it's a relious thing around repentance

If your God will not forgive your sins then if you've done something bad you may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb - you're unsavable - why listen to priests?

So God must forgive sins - but then people may think - nah - I'll repent later.

So you get all this stuff about the end of the world constantly at hand - the Gospells are full of it Jesus says no one knows when it will happen, 'thief in the night' all that stuff.

In fact Jesus even says that some of his actual audience standing there will not have died before the end of the world!

But I agree if you don't believe in an afterlife why worry about it - if you do then it's a big deal
