The need for women to take maternity leave has often been cited as a reason why less women make it to the top of their respective professions, proportionately speaking, than their male counterparts. Most of the time I think that is defensive bluster from males, but when it comes to medicine and surgery, the need for maternity leave will undoubtedly interrupt the long apprenticeship required to become a consultant.
But it cannot be the only reason - there is a significant disparity between females who become consultants in medicine, anaesthetics, paediatrics, gerontology etc and those who become, say consultant orthopoedic surgeons , which cannot be entirely laid at the door of interrupted training.

How can NHS continue when offering free cosmetic surgery & gender reconstruction, hair transplants for depressed baldies, taxis for DHSS etc. Helicopters are the norm now.
Jezza, complain to ward sister. I saw same neglect to my OH in a private hospital. The sick and elderly seem held to ransome in hospitals these days.

no it isn't, but there are as been pointed out numerous times lots of waste,
i have been sent to a couple of private companies because going through the NHS will take too long, should i wait for NHS appointment possibly making the problem worse, or go with the private option, on my GP's referral, i go with what's quickest, ask yourself why the NHS is overloaded in the first place, as to women in medicine, no idea why anyone thinks to restrict their numbers, surely that is a question for another debate.
I have seen the very bad side of the NHS, the laziness, the same nurses chatting around stations, whilst patients ring the buzzers for a glass of water, or to go to the bathroom, but at times i have seen the best, caring and indeed go out of their way to make things more comfortable.
NHS isn't on the way out, it needs major surgery, and no one in government down has the guts to do it.,
