Fibroids?

I've got two fibroids which are giving me stomach pain. I have seen a consultant who is of the opinion that they will shrink as I get past the menopause and the pain will lessen or cease, therefore no action need be taken - except I should take pain-killers in the meantime. Unfortunately pain-killers are not taking the pain away, and I thought I was already past the menopause. I finished my periods a couple of years ago. Anyone know how long the menopause usually lasts?

Have any ABers got fibroids? Have you had any treatment for them? I know I need to take it further with the medical peeps, just wondering if anyone has any experience of them.

Thanks.

Morning Mrs. C - I had a large fibroid 12 years ago along with endometriosis but had a hysterectomy, best thing I ever did.

Have you had an ultra scan to determine if they are definately fibroids ? Not sure how long they would take to shrink after the menopause. If you are on HRT I would think this would aggreviate the situation, pumping hormones into you etc etc. I think there are alternatives available to shrink the fibroids, I would get a second opinion Mrs. C, it sounds like they might be pressing on something to cause you so much pain.

My diagnosis - get back to the Docs and ask for a second opinion.
I also had acute pain due to fibroids and took pain killers for six months before having my hysterectomy go back to the docs for a second opinion on his diagnosis they are not always right.

Thanks very much DEN and waterbabe. I've had an internal scan and they have been confirmed as fibroids. I know I need to go back and ask for further treatment, I just feel like I am being a nuisance as I've got several things going wrong at the moment and I feel like I'm always whinging at the doctor. I am not on HRT, I've never taken it.
Hi mrs.chappie.
Just to say that a friend of mine had uterine fibroid embolization where they effectively cut off the blood supply to the fibroids. It has proved an absolute nightmare and she is still in considerable pain months after the operation and has been off work for four months. I'm sure they will shrink down, not sure how long it will take. Good luck.

Thanks yogasun. Sorry to read about your friend - sounds horrendous. (Oops, sorry, I meant the treatment, not your friend, of course).
