Whether you liked his political view or not he certainly had an impact on the nation from behind the scenes.

A young age for these days.

Tamborine,

McAlpine's used immigrants and paid them very low wages. Working conditions were poor and dangerous.

// From the 1930s onwards, the company employed large numbers of Irish who had come to England looking for work. The harsh working conditions with which McAlpine's management treated their labourers has gone down in Irish emigrant folklore. The song "McAlpine's Fusiliers" (written by Dominic Behan and made famous by "The Dubliners") described the realities of life on the building site for many Irish expatriates. //

Not too dissimilar to things now. I wonder if the current lot in east Anglia employing eastern Europeans will turn out to be tomorrows Conservative Party benefactors.
Gawd. the class war just goes on and on doesn't it. I don't suppose McAlpine's in the 1930's was any better or worse than most other construction companies. it was a different age for christsake. the past is another country.
// I think jno's comment about being delighted he is dead refers to mass rapist/paedo/molester Jimmy Saville, not Lord McAlpine. It was clearly in reply to another poster who wished Saville was still alive.

Do you wish Saville were alive?

I agree with jno. //

I misread it. I thought she was talking about McAlpine. Apologies jno. I'm also delighted Savile is dead.
just -jude ...such is power, I know exactly where you're coming from!

jag-jag, as you can probably gather there is more to this I'm afraid but I'm not keen to discuss right now.
