Why, why why? They were offered a home for this poor giraffe but they still destroyed it despite protests and people trying to find a new home for it! This is why IMO zoos should not exist, what care do they give for animals in this sort of instance, it's appalling the destruction of a life that should not have been held in captivity anyway...b'stards!

perhaps they should just have left the giraffe in the lions' section and let nature take its course
this is not the wild though is it, this is a public place, a zoo for families, to walk around, admiring the animals, not to see the slaughter of some poor creature.
Couldn't they have just sterilised it?
perhaps they didn't think of that.
One slash of the knife or two bites from the vet, a pair of Rocky Mountain Oysters for tea, and poor Mr Giraffe could have lived..... I agree. Now he is Kitty-Kat for the panthera leos....what a shame.
This is an absolutely shocking occurrence for anyone who loves and respects animals (and in front of children, too!), but I feel that all zoos should not be tarred with the same brush. Many of them, London Zoo included, are extremely careful not to inbreed, and will import new blood, or send their animals to other zoos/safari parks. They have also done sterling work in saving endangered species and returning them to the wild (the oryx in Arabia, Przwalski's horse, etc.), and if they weren't able to do this (ie with the giraffe) it could have been neutered and kept, and a lot of kids would have not been upset by seeing a sight like this.
