What city is Hill Street supposed to be in, or is meant to represent any fading city on the eastern seaboard of the USA in the 1980's?

Long time since I saw it, but I believe it was supposed to be Chicago.
It sure was, gosh I miss that show! I loved Belker even though he seemed gross!

Well actually you don't have to miss it, because it is showing on more4 now (Freeview, in case you don't know).

I'm not actually watching it because I recorded every episode when Channel four showed it from series one years back - I just haven't had a chance to watch them yet. Maybe when I retire.....

The opening credit sequence was shot in Chicago, while the episodes were shot in Los Angeles. Location scouts said it was hard to find L.A. locations for the show because the locations could not have visible palm trees. (At least the first episode (possibly as many as the first three) was shot on location in Chicago)

The pilot script said the show took place in an unnamed Midwestern city. Throughout the show's seven year run, the exact name of the city was never mentioned.
