Finished the puzzle but have a problem with preamble.
I don't see how the 'prominent 25' was associated
with the word at 6ac a century ago. (although I understand the other connections).

6 Across was pivotal in ' 25 D and a 4 letter word' .
I managed to fall into the elephant trap in this one :)
Slaney, what is/was the trap? (In case I do the same!)

Hi Never,
Yes, I know what you mean. But not a century ago.
(6ac and 40ac were, but not the 'prominent 25.)
Mystron, thank for that - I was in danger of leading myself astray. All sorted now.
Boreas, having finished, I now see your point. All I can come up with, and it's pretty feeble. is that the seminal book (by the prominent...) refers to 25 D in its title!
Question Author
Never,
That's better than anything I can come up with - but it's still a century adrift.
What a marvellous puzzle! Many thanks to Nutmeg.

Rabet,,What do you think about my question?
Boreas - you have fallen right in the trap, I think. There are two pretty transparent hints in the thread, and, I think, you have ignored the significance of the clashes.
Boreas, the incompatibility of the "century" ago and the person in question should suggest that you must look for another name.
I do not understand the wordplay in 16a nor do I see how the 4th letter in 21d is clued.
16A is (H)ANSEL to the west of M

Like you, think 21D isn't quite right. No 'N' in "TO ALLOW" ?

Belated thanks to Laphria and Rabet!
