Why is it that when you buy something in a box and you want to return it to the shop, you can never get the thing to fit back in the box properly?

because the devil designed a way to reshape it as you tweezer or use pliers to get the stuff out of the packaging.
leave some of the packaging out and if they ask you why say you thought they would want to inspect it before giving you a refund -)

moulded plastic packaging is a nightmare.

Yes, emmie, it is and so is anything which sits in molded polystyrene.
i bought an item, it had three layers of plastic moulded packaging. i spent an hour trying to get the thing out. scissors didn't get through the layers, nor did a knife, resorted to a heavy duty hacksaw, i kid you not.

That sounds like a health and safety issue, emmie. You could have done yourself some serious damage.
It's blooming sod's law at it Tilly.

Same reason why it sometimes nigh on impossible to refold a map.
