Geranium Cuttings

I have some geraniums in pots in my open porch which amazingly have survived this mild Winter and are still flowering. Can I take lots of cuttings now from them, thereby increasing my stock of them?

Hi Ann, my mum took cuttings from hers (which are in a fairly cold greenhouse) a couple of weeks ago and they are doing very well so far, so yes :-)

Thanks Chris - I did actually look at the RHS si but thought it said to take cuttings in late Summer to over Winter. I need to take some now.

Ah thanks peas - will try it then. Maybe tomorrow after I have covered them up tonight as they say we are in for the coldest frost of the Winter.

Well my link says "Pelargoniums can also be propagated by taking softwood cuttings from spring to autumn" and we're just about into spring, aren't we?

You could probably get away with taking cuttings at any time of the year but you must treat the cutting with a bit of care. Traditionally, late summer is the correct time....oh those warm days sitting round a table taking thousands upon thousands of named varieties cuttings for Brighton Parks dept are just a distant memory now.

Anyway, if you were to take cuttings now, they would appreciate a little bottom heat if you can but not essential. You mustn't over water them though. They hate humidity and will rot if you keep them too cold and too wet. A good compost of 50/50 cutting compost/pearlite or vermiculite is ideal....ive rooted them in neat pearlite before. A nice north or east facing window sil is ideal for them...they don't mind a bit of sun but you obviously don't want them to get too dry.
