So because they have sacked him it isn't damaging to the party? Of course it is. They have made a preventable error. An error made by not validating their own member when putting him into a highly public position and when putting him up as their candidate in an election.

It is an own goal because they have done their opponents work for them.

You can still win a match if you have scored an own goal. It does not necessarily change the result. I still think UKiP will win most seats next month, but this is a minor setback.

Don't mean to be pedantic, but an 'Home Goal' is one scored for the home team. An 'Own Goal' is one kicked into ones own net.
