I have a motherboard that is capable of running between 266/333/400 mhz. I have a 512mb memory stick running at 333 (pc2700) - could I put in another 512mb stick which runs at 400mhz(pc 3200) to boost my memory up to 1 gb ? I take it i would need to keep the board running at 333 fsb

The usual answer is that the 2 sticks should be at the same rating and as near to each other as poss in spec. It's not recommended doing what you were thinking: try this:

maximum-standard-memory-slots.html
which will give you the info

many thanks
foulecamp is technically correct, howver I have mixed memory speeds on many different computers with absolutely no problems whatsoever, as you say, just make sure all the memory runs at the speed of the lowest stick.

In fact, I am currently running one stick of Crucial PC2700 and another one of Crucial PC3200 on my Gigabyte Athlon XP board and I've never had a problem. It certainly helped going to 1Gig for BF2!

It would be worth a go as you won't break anything
