No doubt you will try to right it off as a Euro election, but it is an election nonetheless and labour are no copping it too. As I predicted.

People are fed up of the lying conniving I know best attitude of the current leaders and appear to be voting with their feet.

One should always vote, even if you go down and destroy your ballot paper in protest.

Otherwise you cannot moan or comment on the party that win.

The European Elections should be about Europe. On the face of it the two parties who realise this the most are UKIP (out out out!) and the LibDems (in in in!). Certainly the Party Politicals I've seen from Labour had embarrassingly little to do with Europe, and just seemed like an excuse to bash the Coalition...

as jim says, the only parties with views on Europe are the minority ones; Labour don't seem to care much and the Tories are desperatedly trying to fudge the issue with the general election in mind. It's the Tories who are split on the subject, so they've got most to lose (or gain, of course).

I with ymb, if you don't agree with anybody, ruin your paper, at least you'll have had your say. I have ruined ballot papers in the past however, OH and I have a postal vote and already cast them, although I suspect we've cancelled each other out!

BlueToffee, I remember a story from the world of cricket... two county cricketers playing a three-day away match, drove back home together on the first evening to vote in their constituency, then back to where they were playing. Turned out one had voted Labour and one Tory. Waste of petrol!

Only mildly interested ymb...its next May, not this May that is important.

Anybody could have predicted that UKIP would be ahead in the Euro election. After all, being anti-Europe is UKIP's one and only policy. But it won't make any difference to Britain's membership of the EEC. I seem to have repeat this time after time but, one last time.... it will be Westminster that will decide whether Britain remains part of the EEC or not, not a vote in Brussels. Even if every British MEP is a UKIP candidate, Britain will still be a Member.

In fact, if UKIP does gain more seats at Brussels, it could only make it worse.
UKIP's record of attendance is woeful and when they are there, they just disrupt proceedings.

So, all that those people who vote UKIP on May 22nd will achieve is this...lots of MEPs who don't want to be there and less MEPs that do, and are willing to fight for Britain's corner.

Just as in the Westminster elections, UKIP will achieve nothing...a wasted vote. But I expect that the Voters will feel better afterwards !

does it not make you a little embarrassed that the main parties continue to ride rough shod over public opinion mikey? Leaving aside personal views is this any different from a despot imposing what is "best" for the people without any reference to what they actually want? UKIP being ahead is the public saying we are not happy, they know that UKIP cannot run the country but they can be used to tell the main parties what the public opinion really is on this subject. Are you happy to crush people who do not agree with the "correct" view on the EU?

TTT, aren't you assuming that all voters want what you want? They plainly don't. The last poll I could find says the majority want to stay in.

On that basis, the parties are following public opinion, which is exactly what you want.

no I'm assuming all those that normally vote UKIP do at least and many more that stick with their normal party because this is only one issue. If there is not a majority against the EU then give us a referendum and I for one will accept the output but they wont will they because all the main parties know it's far from certain that the public will vote the "correct" way.

jno...the voice of reason ! The majority of people polled have always wanted to stay in the EU, yet if you listen to some people, they will tell you the opposite. UKIP are just rabble-rousers, and their votes will count for nothing, because they will never hold the power to be able to make any changes.

I'm not sure why this isn't obvious.......in order to change things, you have to hold power first. History is written by the victors, not the losers ! And that is what UKIP are destined to be.

I don't see much point in a referendum when the electorate invariably seems to be fairly evenly divided. If the voice of the people was genuinely being ignored - if it was, say 80-20 - then yes, no problem. But at the moment that's nowhere near being the case. If half the population are happy with the status quo there's no justification for allowing the other half (51%?) to overturn half a century of history.

It's simply not true that "the parties are ignoring pubic opinion". There is no one public opinion. Nonetheless, the antis can do it if they want - simply by voting Ukip at the general election. Let's see if they do.

TTT. I don't want a referendum but you obviously do.

But if you think that it might help, then people should vote Tory, not UKIP. The Tories are the only party that combines an ability to win a General Election with any enthusiasm for a referendum. Labour show no liking for a vote on the subject and the LibDems won't have one either.

We have had our postal vote, I was surprised to see about six anti-EU parties on the list of candidates for MEP. some I haven't heard of before today. This election is of little interest to me it's the one next year that will tell.
