Still working on this and have a couple of solutions missing. I think the extra words indicate adding bars over or under the letters indicated in those words. I think Loftus is an extra word so I'm assuming it indicates the raising of US but not sure how or to where.
My first guess at the person is a classical character but can't yet see the path describing him.
That fits the preamble - "oddly written message"- and person I have in mind, certainly. So thanks !
Aha, if you then move on from the H of labyrinth you get another word that ends in the bottom right corner so that together the two words are a description of the person.
Still puzzled by the Loftus and title of puzzle though.
Hmm...only thing I can come up with is there's some connection, anagram perhaps, of the answer to clue two and the creature that lived in the labyrinth and that Loftus is connected in some way ? Although could be complete blind alley !
A clue / clew is what Ariadne gave to Theseus to help him out. No idea what 'two' is about. Nor what you do with Loftus. I had thought the name would be made from the boxed in letters you get once you've followed the instructions but that doesn't seem to work. I know the name I'm looking for. Any ideas?
The title may refer us to the first word of the clue to 2 Down? LOFTUS may have been what the named person said as he jumped? I'm rather clutching at straws, because I can't see the "letters of the person's name... scattered", but I'm very confident that I know the name.
Aha, just come back to this and realised the significance of Loftus, it refers to adding bars to L of TUS. That yields the last three boxed letters of the person. Clue Two might refer to Ariadne the lover of Theseus and who supplied the thread. Great puzzle!
