What a magnificent puzzle! I hope this one is remembered when the puzzle of the year vote is made. It will be hard to top. Thanks, Aramis!

RR...It depends on the difficulty of the puzzle as to whether my mental image of the setter is one of proud father (mother/parent/guardian...) watching their child go out into the world, seeing how they cope, and then preparing the next child to be a touch less sarcastic, selfish or wicked, or is one of cackling and snorting fiend with a maniacal laugh, almost certainly a twitch, who gleefully watches the anguish triggered by his obscurity on the colour coding of resistors as he plans his next mental cheese grater based around palindromic phrases with satanic messages written backwards within.

The all-time best preamble for a puzzle is, surely, due to Alberich:

"All answers are to be treated as Rosicrucians, Visigoths or Boy Scouts. The relationship between them can be determined by encoding half the letters in the grid (to be determined by the solver) with a code also to be determined by the solver. This gives instructions in an Ugro-Finnic language which may be interpreted in seven different ways. On discovering the relationship a Lorentzian transformation is required to locate five virtual elements in the grid..."

Thankfully it's a spoof!
Jim - please don't give the setters ideas like that!
A very gentle but most amusing romp from a veteran setter. Gives us all plenty of time to watch the plethora of sporting events worldwide this weekend (and beyond). Many thanls to Nibor.
