Bank Holiday Vet Charges..

< Coco was being violently sick on Monday, so much so that she seemed on the point of collapse. I rang the vets who said to take her straight in and that a fee of £100 would apply as it was bank holiday. Is this normal practice? We've taken her on a Sunday before without being charged so much, final bill was £150. We'd give anything to help her but thought this a bit cheeky.

Well sqad, GP's are only dealing with a single species, vets however have to deal with hundreds, so yes vets cover a far broader field, and like Jules said, their patience cant give them a lot of with regard to diagnoses, and they may also, bite, peck, scratch, sting or even eat you. :-)

The statement was \\\Vets training is longer than that of a GP, \\ .............a GP has to be medically qualified,which is 6 years and then 2 years post graduate training as a minimum which makes 8 years minimum.

So how is the Vet's training longer than a GP's?
It isn't.

Yes, Vets have a greater number of species and yes, the animals can't talk (often an advantage) BUT the diagnostic variation and sophistication is much greater in the human AND...in the animal world, if you get the management wrong, you don't get sued.

and GP - five or six to start with - now two years foundation (PRHO has gone the way of the world ) and three years vocation...

And vets have the acceptable option of euthanasia once the patient reaches a certain point, a point at which doctors would be expected to pursue treatment and have knowledge to a far deeper level.

Oh it is always cheaper to put down rather than admit for anything more than one night.

standard blood test or cheap x ray is hardly ever done as it is so expensive and charged separately.

I put up a simple practice model - why dont you absorb the basic tests into practice overheads and then the initial consultation will look much better and cheaper - and this would have the effect of dragging in patients because "Mr X does much more for er much less"
Mr X looked at me as tho I was crazy as hell and went on being a well-paid practice senior and I went off and became a treasurer of a national organisation.
