I sort of see where he is coming from, but fining the poor? If they are poor then how will fining them help? What if the parents are poor because they are uneducated or simply thick?

And I wonder how some of the 'modern' parents will like this:

"It's up to head teachers to say quite clearly, 'You're a poor parent'."

Quite. so much is subjective with regards to education. I think as long as kids are polite and don't cause trouble at school that's all that can be sensibly asked. You can't dictate to people that they HAVE to attend parent's evenings,just quite who the hell does he think he is?

Fine them....and if they don't pay because they can't, fine them again......and then if they can't pay that fine......bang 'em up for a while.

I don't see the modern teachers' concern. In my day the secondary school tutor used to tell us our parents HAD to pay a fee at the start of each term, that is was obligatory. I always thought it was a cheek and what sort of law allowed for this demand when we'd all already paid our rates & taxes. The teachers didn't seem to mind then.

(Years & years later I read that such demands were supposed to be voluntary contributions. Like hell they were. Those who hadn't yet paid were asked on a daily basis and asked when the money was going to be paid.)

As a parent who DOES read to and with her children and also attends parents evenings it is unbelievable to me that some parents don't take an interest in their child's eduction. But of course that is their choice.

However, I do also help out in my son's reception class and the number of kids there who NEVER read with their parents not even 5 minutes at bedtime is shocking and it simply puts them behind in their learning also puts them off school from an early age because they feel left out and left behind when all their friends are moving up the reading levels etc.

Plus this is putting additional strain on the resources teachers have when a few children are not progressing with the rest of the class.

I don't think fining them is a good idea but more support is needed to help parents understand how much their kids are affected by their "attitude" or "inability" to encourage their children's education.
