Holes In Grass

Returned from a three week holiday, cut the grass and can now see approx 70-80 holes in the grass , size of hole about half an inch accross and about one inch deep. Any ideas please? No signs of any animal movemnt over the past 48 hours.

Forgot to say, no trials to the holes or any piles of dirt, just holes.

Boxtops just had a look and they are random, no pattern at all, very strange, grass been down about three years no problems before , live in the south east.

Kjn.. we've had similar to this before... and it was Leather Jackets..think its the CraneFly, larvae.. the adults drop the ''eggs'' in soil etc.. in our case it was around the edge of the lawn.. when they hatch they leave small holes..Might be worth investigating..I think you can get rid of them by pouring a diluted soloution of Jayes fluid around the area... they will return each year, but check up..I'm not quite sure about that....it mine 'burn' the grass and not safe to use if you have cats..children etc... hope that helps! Yes - sounds like Chafer grubs or Leatherjackets.

Yep, we get Jackdaws in our garden after the leatherjackets and it sounds like your grass looks exactly like ours after they've been.

Thank you for your answers . I guess the next question is how did you deal with the problem, have googled and it seems that due to the contents of the stuff that you use to be able to use was considered dangerous it has now been withdrawn.

To me, it sounds like a green woodpecer has been foraging for ants and their grubs, or perhaps flocks of starlings (raiding party) have been probing for leather jackets (crane fly grubs).
No action required, they're actually doing you a favor.
