I have a well established cherry tree that was covered in fruit (until the birds got to it but that's ok)
Can I plant a plum tree approx 2 meters away?

Many thanks

Why not?
In the world of trees 2m is not very far, therefore I would recommend a dwarf variety like Prunus domestica "Black Amber"
2m isn't very far, if you consider the spread of both trees.

Thank you
I will get a dwarf one - I have a dwarf pear tree coming along very nicely

Another question about the pear tree - it has sprouted a shoot near the bottom of the trunk - can I cut this off, re-pot and expect to see it grow in years to come?

Many thanks again
Hi Ric,

These dwarf varieties are usually grafted on to a vigorous rootstock near the base of the stem.
the rootstock is most likely the native wild pear (Pyrus sylvestris), so I guesss its up to you, if you want to try a cutting from it.

Ps don't forget to throw a penny in the planting hole, when you plant the plum, for good luck ;-)
I meant to add, otherwisse cut the shoot off from the base of the pear or it may take over and dominate your dwarf pear.
