There used to be a slapstick comedian on tv, said very little but his act was mainly falling about getting tangled up in the wires of his mike, very visually funny, anyone remember who he was?

Norman Wisdom?
George Carl?

Charlie Drake?
Mr Pastry?
sounds like Charlie Drake to me.
It was definitely George Carl, I remember it well.
I don't actually know but would say it was definitely not Charlie Drake, he used to talk a lot (hello my darlins')
I agree prudie, Norman Wisdom did too - 'Mr Grimsdale' ha
George Carl fits the OP's description to a T - he was hilarious, IMO.
