I posted in Technology but no replies, so here goes again.... does anyone know how to extend the length of rings so the answer machine doesn't keep cutting in? I can't seem to download a manual easily so perhaps someone already has one. Thanks

There does not seem to be any much in the way of manuals available when searching via Google, I guess due it being an older system. I believe the unit was originally sold through Argos. If so, you try contacting Argos customer services.

Not sure if this helps, but you could try holding down some of the buttons to see if that gives you any options. For example on a BT R123e Phone/answering unit there is a 'Skip' button, which when pressed and held in it announces in increments the number of rings up to a maximium of nine rings which is then set to that value when the button is released.
If you've played back any recorded messages the machine waits for 6 rings, but if there are messages you haven't played yet it assumes you're out & cuts in after 2 rings. There's no adjustment to these numbers!
