Hi, I've used this site for advice on what to plant, when, how many etc..

http://www.hedgesdirect.co.uk/acatalog/advice-on-planting-density.html
The general consensus seems to be 2-3 feet, knowing haw much they can spread after a couple of years, I'd opt for the latter and go for 3 foot.
For best results, I'd go for a staggered double row, rather than one single row.
