Since having a catheter fitted in August 2014, I have had two or three urine infection found by my GP following a waster sample. Treated by penicillin. No gret problems.

This weekend had some weird feelings in the wrong area, including pain, and to top it all my urine was pretty blood-stained so went to an out of hours GP Service at local hospital.

He thought it was not wise to do a urine test as it had too much blood in it. More penicillin (2 tabs for next 7 days - no problem).

My real question is why is blood in the urine a sign of infection? Other infections don't bleed, why this one? Might it be a tear or spot of some kind in the urethra/bladder?

Final note : not sure if its relevant but I am male
