Windows on Macs

Just wondering what opinions AB'ers have on the above story. What are the pros and cons? Would it not be easier to buy a Windows PC to start with?

The main reason I have a Mac is for the OS X operating system, that does't run on a PC. I also need to use software which only runs on a Windows PC such as Napster.

This new setup would mean I could go for a Power Mac (when they bring out a Intel based one) rather than having to settle for the mac Mini and a windows PC as I currently do. Essentially the extra expense would be worth it.

Pro's - Only having to have one computer
Con's - Apple hardware is expensive

If you want to use windows, then get a dell or some other manufacturer that's not apple. that's not the point of why apple is doing what they are doing. they're acheiving two things here: first, it's for those who want to make the transition over to a mac (using mac OS X), but absolutely have to be able to use software that runs only on windows right now. secondly, it'll also help those people to see all the advantages mac OS X has over windows XP.

ever tried installing GNU/Linux together with Windows? As much as I dislike Microsoft for its practices etc. Windows does have some great features. This is most noticible when you start using GNU/Linux. While I totally agree on the philosophy behind the GNU system (free software), the current implmentations of GNU/Linux just don't match Windows for actually getting stuff done; for a start, many leading programs just aren't available for GNU/Linux.

I think the same will be seen by those making the transition over to Mac OS X. They'll soon realise the great features it has over XP, and will dislike using XP more and more.

For someone in an industry (like graphics) where Mac is the norm, the ability to dual boot to XP might occasionally come in useful. But there is no logic whatsoever in buying a Mac with the sole aim of running Windows. Windows machines are MUCH cheaper (simply because it's a much bigger market). As has been pointed out, those people who buy Mac's buy them because they beleive Mac OS X is a better operating system.

Whats the point?
Us superior human beings who use mac do so because its better in every way.
The knuckledraggers who continue to use windows should stay down there in the gutter and allow us to soar to great heights and look down on the rest of the plebs.
This idea makes me feel dirty and some what violated.
I have one thing to say to Windows users
"Get back down your own end!"

Mac users can be very snoby. Personally I prefer to use the Mac OS, however I do enjoy the odd game or two as well as having to use certain windows applications.

For me, it means that I can get rid of my PC and live in blissful content with a dual booting Mac . Result !

gary baldy, having spent nearly 30 years in IT, it still amazes me that anyone can get so emotional about a machine - not just Mac users, but there are also Windows users who seem to thing MS is a religion - and Linux users who think BG is the very devil himself. Me, I use Windows because as a software developer, I need to address the largest market, but really! A machine's a machine's a machine.
