I live in S Yorks near to an old drover/pack horse/ salt road crossing the Pennines. At the side of the road are several circular shaped enclosures about 30 m diameter bounded by a dry stone wall about 4/5 ft high. I believe these were used as overnight refuges for animal traffic on this road. Are there other examples of these elsewhere in the country ?

Pretty common in the Scottish borders, especially beside old drover's roads.
I think you are referring to pinfolds for rounding up and gathering sheep, there are several round here in W. Yorkshire and several roads named Pinfold Lane. A lot of the ones locally have been restored.
Look pinfolds up on Wiki for more info.
